HikingSpecs is a forensic battery-audit lab. We collect as little as the site needs to function and we never sell your data. This page explains exactly what we receive when you use the site, why, and how long we keep it.
What we collect
We do not ask you to create an account, and we do not collect names, addresses, or payment information. The data we handle falls into three categories: the GPX route files you choose to audit, the audit records those produce, and anonymous usage analytics. Each is described below.
GPX route data
When you upload a GPX file to run an audit, its track points (coordinates, elevation, and timestamps) are sent to our server and used to compute the route’s segments and the battery audit for the device you selected. We use this data only to produce your audit. We do not build a profile of your movements, and we do not share raw GPX uploads with third parties. The resulting audit is stored as an immutable record (see Data retention) keyed by a content hash, not by your identity.
Audit records
Each completed audit is written to an append-only log: the computed physics outputs (effective capacity, blackout ETA, reality gap, risk class), the device identifier, and the scenario inputs derived from your route (temperature, wind, distance, altitude). These records are addressed by a cryptographic hash so that any audit is reproducible and shareable via its URL. They contain no personal identifiers.
Analytics & cookies
We use privacy-friendly, aggregate analytics (Vercel Analytics) to understand traffic volume and which pages are visited. This does not use tracking cookies to identify you across sites and does not build an advertising profile. HikingSpecs sets no advertising or cross-site tracking cookies of its own.
Third-party services
The site runs on Vercel (hosting and analytics) and stores audit records in Supabase (database). Weather inputs used in route modelling may be retrieved from third-party weather APIs. These providers process data on our behalf to deliver the service; they are not permitted to use it for their own purposes.
Data retention
Audit records are immutable and retained so that shared audit links remain reproducible over time. Because they contain no personal identifiers, they are not linked to you. If you believe a specific audit should be removed, contact us at the address below.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or request deletion of personal data we hold about you. Because we operate without accounts and store no personal identifiers, we typically hold no data that can be tied to you individually. If you have a request or question about your data, email us and we will respond.
